ASBMB’s 2018 Op-Ed Writing Campaign
March 19 @ 8:00 am - April 12 @ 5:00 pm EDT
Advocacy comes in many shapes and sizes. Whether it’s marching or performing outreach activities, there are many ways to amplify your message and build support for important issues that affect you and your community.
One effective way to reach a broad audience is to publish an opinion piece in your local newspaper.
An op-ed lets both your community and policymakers know just how important funding decisions and policies that affect the scientific enterprise are to their lives.
This year, Congress moved to pass a bipartisan budget deal that would allow for increases in federal spending for scientific research. Help underscore the importance of robust investments in science by writing about how adequate support for research affects the health and economy of your community.
Not familiar with writing an op-ed? Watch the ASBMB’s webinar Grassroots Advocacy: How to write an op-ed. In this webinar, Dr. Tricia Serio, dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, provides a how-to for writing op-eds with a lens on advocating for the scientific enterprise.
