Tweet or call your member of Congress

 

Twitter instructions

Sending a tweet to your member of Congress is easy! Follow these steps:

  1. Identify your representatives in the U.S. House and Senate. Visit www.house.gov and put your ZIP code in the top right corner of the page. Visit www.senate.gov and click the “Find Your Senators” drop-down menu at the top left of the page.
  2. Enter the name of your representative or senator and “Twitter” in Google or your preferred search engine.  Or click here to search.
  3. Send your message.  Don’t forget to include your member’s Twitter handle and the hashtag #ASBMBSupportsScience
  4. CLICK HERE  and tell us that you sent tweets so we know which representatives have been tweeted!

 

Some sample tweets:

  • It’s time to open the government and support science, [insert representative / senator twitter handle]! #ASBMBSupportsScience
  • I am a federally supported scientist – and the shutdown of science at the NSF needs to end! [insert representative / senator twitter handle]! #ASBMBSupportsScience
  • I support science, and I hope you and your colleagues will too, [insert representative / senator twitter handle]! #ASBMBSupportsScience

 

Phone call instructions

Placing a phone call to your representative or senator is an effective way to be heard, and it isn’t hard at all!

  1. Identify your lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate. Visit www.house.gov and put your ZIP code in the top right corner of the page. Visit www.senate.gov and click the “Find Your Senators” drop-down menu at the top left of the page.
  2. Go to their websites and find their Washington, D.C., office phone numbers.  Most House office phone numbers will start (202) 225-xxxx, and most Senate office phone numbers will start (202) 224-xxxx.
  3. Leave your message with the staffer handing phone calls.
  4. CLICK HERE and tell us that you called so we know which representatives have been called!

 

If you choose to call, keep your message to 30 seconds or shorter.

Here is a sample script:

Hi, this is [say your name], and I live in [insert hometown].  I’m calling to encourage [insert name of Representative or Senator here] to support American science and end the government shutdown that is affecting science agencies such as the NSF, EPA and FDA.  I’m a scientist and many of my colleagues [and I, if accurate] rely on federal support to fund the scientific research the [or we, if accurate] do that may lead to biomedical breakthroughs that will save lives and improve Americans’ quality of life.  Thank you!

Be courteous, brief, and specific.
